Masked

Masked 04 (Hero) (Detail)

The Masked Series is a study in veils — in what is worn, what is projected, and what is hidden beneath. Each ceramic mask is a study in the complex negotiations of identity, a tangible record of the faces one learns to wear.

In your world, the term "masking" carries a particular weight for those of us who are neurodivergent. It describes the subtle, often exhausting art of projecting observed behaviors to navigate spaces shaped by neurotypical ideals. These performed gestures, not inherently one's own, can ripple with an uncanny frequency — a subtle dissonance that others may sense but not name.

The earliest masks in this series give form to that dissonance. They reflect inherited ideals, images of desirability and identity absorbed from the world, but with their features deliberately misaligned. A painted smile slips from the sculpted lips; a serene gaze is offset by a tense brow. This visual rupture is the uncanniness made visible, the seam where the performed self strains against the authentic one. This series asks not who we are behind the mask, but what the mask itself chooses to show — and what it desperately tries to hold in.
